Truth is, both solid and engineered wood have their pros and cons and both can do a great job for your interior renovation. ![]() So, does that mean that MDF is the better option? Not necessarily the case. The technical evolution of this new material has led to the emergence of new businesses like flat pack assembly & deliveries and whole communities of passionate flat pack hackers. This is why more manufacturers turn to engineered wood and trends like flat pack furniture have conquered a vast share of the market. However, the rapid progress of technology and manufacturing has now reached a level, where engineered wood has become more reliable and comes at a lower cost. When MDF was an emerging product, it was less durable compared to good old solid wood. Most would choose solid wood, but is that choice based on facts or is it just a common belief? These types of finishes should not be applied to panels that will be installed in humid environments, such as kitchens and bathrooms. Waxes or oils are usually applied in a single coat to previously prepared surfaces. It is recommended that the applied primer and clearcoat be from the same manufacturer so that there is no incompatibility between them. Between coats, surfaces are sanded with 320 fine grit. Then, a finishing varnish is applied in one or two coats, depending on the manufacturer's prescription. ![]() After the first layer has dried, the surfaces are sanded with a fine grain of 320, in order to eliminate the raised pores of the wood. When the finish is made with varnish, the first layer to be applied is a primer, also called “insulator” or “pore filler”. Two-component acrylic varnishes are widely used, as they do not yellow over time. Any suitable varnish for wood can be applied over Valchromat. The finish can be done with varnishes, waxes or oils. The Valchromat panel must be applied with a finish, in order to protect the surface, maintaining its natural appearance. The Valchromat panel should not be used in areas where there is direct contact with water, such as kitchen worktop sink cutouts and shower cubicles. Whenever the panel is used in wet areas, such as kitchen worktops and bathrooms, it should be protected with varnish and the faces and fields should be well sealed. Valchromat is a water-repellent panel, supplied unfinished, in which the application of varnish, wax or oil is essential. This variation can be observed on the same face, between faces of the same panel, between different productions or thicknesses. The Valchromat panel, due to the use of organic dyes and the natural variation in the color of the wood, has differences in hue. ![]() Valchromat is an MDF.HLS, according to the EN 622-5 standard. The fibers are impregnated with organic dyes and chemically bonded to each other by a special resin which gives Valchromat unique physico-mechanical characteristics. Valchromat E05 is a mass-dyed wood fiber panel with formaldehyde emission ≤ 0.05 ppm. In all cases, it is recommended to apply a finish. Moisture-resistant, it is indicated for interior use but can also be used for exterior applications under shelter (equivalent to class 2).
